Yorkshire used-car salesmen convicted

Five men who ran a used-car business in Yorkshire have been convicted of conspiring to defraud customers and money laundering.

Kirk Claus (47) of Mytholmroyd, Craig Firth (51) of Queensbury, Michael Adams (41) of Shipley, David Ingham (42) of Halifax and David Kelly (28) of Stockport were all found guilty by a jury at Leeds Crown Court after a trial lasting eight weeks.

An investigation by Yorkshire and the Humber Trading Standards Group Scambuster Team led to the conviction for defrauding customers of Chequered Flag Car Sales and other companies trading from the building in Halifax Road in Hipperholme.

Colin Rumford, a spokesman for the Scambuster Team, confirmed the investigation stemmed from a number of complaints to the Consumer Direct helpline between September 2009 and August 2010 about the men selling used cars.

West Yorkshire and City of York trading standards services and West Yorkshire Police have also assisted with the investigation and the judge suggested a prison sentence was probable when sentencing occurs on September 27.
