Chrysler Reported Working on Ram Pickup Hybrid Using Dual-Mode Technology

Chrysler may be lagging behind fellow U.S. automakers Ford and General Motors when it comes to addressing its fleet's carbon footprint and petroleum consumption, but the company appears to be trying to catch up.

Chrysler may once again be developing a hybrid-electric powertrain as well as a diesel V-8 engine for its Ram 1500 pickup truck, said, a Website dedicated to Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge news.

We're previously reported that a hybrid Ram is under development for testing, but word earlier this year was that a full-bore retail push wasn't in the works.

But - citing information gleaned from the Star inventory system Chrysler dealers use to order vehicles, says that a Ram pickup may be soon be available with a 5.0-liter diesel as well as a "transmission with motors" dual-mode hybrid option that was previously featured in the Dodge Durango and Aspen hybrids.

Respoding to our query about the report, Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga said that while Chrysler continues to look for ways to broaden its electrification efforts and powertrain choices, there's no specific plan for either a diesel or hybrid Ram 1500 pickup.
