Car Safety Tips: Wear your Seat Belt

Adults and children over the age of 14 years old must where a seat belt no matter on the circumstance.

Many find the new seat belt laws confusing. Should a young child be on a booster seat, car seat, or will a harness do?

Wearing your seat belt can mean the difference between life or death if you are involved in a car accident, and the driver is responsible for all the passengers in the car so always make sure all are strapped in at all times.

The rules behind car safety and the seatbelt:

  • The Driver – A seatbelt should be fitted and worn at all times.
  • Children under the age of 3 – The Driver always responsible to make sure the Child is in the correct size car seat which is fitted securely. Any local Auto store will able to advise you correctly on what size seat you will need.
  • Children aged 3-12 years (up height 135cm) –The correct seat must be bought and fitted safely
  • Children aged 12–13 years (over 135cm) – A normal adult seat belt can be worn
  • The Driver is no longer responsible if their passanger is over the age of 14 years

Make sure that you never have a rear facing baby seat fitted on a car seat which has an air bag as this can cause serious injuries. Additionally, make sure your children are under control to avoid distraction, and that safety locks are on the car doors.

Meanwhile happy driving and be safe!
