MANUFACTURER OVERVIEW
Mazda began as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, founded in Japan in 1920. Toyo Cork Kogyo renamed itself to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1927, releasing its first car in 1931.
The Toyo Cork Kogyo Co adopted the Mazda name officially in 1984, although every car it had produced previously had bore the Mazda name anyway.
Since 1979, Ford has grown in its investment into Mazda, and with that, more control over it's direction. Effective engineering is now the marketing strategy.
