AUDI A2 HATCHBACK 2000-2005 Review

Good Points

  • Excellent fuel economy
  • Light weight due to aluminium body
  • Comfortable
  • Extremely reliable

Bad Points

  • Engines are noisy when pushed
  • Body roll in the corners

Engines

The kept the engine choice very simple on the Audi A2. There was a 1.4-litre petrol and diesel version in the original models. Later they introduced two slightly more powerful engines in the 1.6-litre petrol and a diesel engine which produced an additional 15bhp.

Performance & Economy

The Audi A2 1.4-litre petrol and diesel engines each reach a respectable 47.1mpg and 65.7mpg respectively and a top speed of 107.5mph. Audi later introduced the 1.6-litre petrol engine which reached a top speed of 125.5mph and a fuel economy of 47.9mpg. In 2004 Audi introduced a more powerful diesel engine that delivered 15bhp more than the smaller diesel engine but with the same fuel efficiency.

The A2 was designed to be a small city car for families and with its nippy steering, good cornering and low CO2 emissions which come in below 120g/km it is the perfect car. The ride can be a little noisy when the engine is pushed but overall the small engines do an excellent job of hauling the A2 around.

Star

Introduction

The Audi A2 is a well equipped and superbly built hatchback that drives extremely well. The A2 is building such a good reputation that many owners of bigger Audi's are starting to downsize to this smaller model to save money on running costs, including fuel and tax rates.

Exterior & Interior

The car is well built on the inside and out. The biggest problem with the car is that it isn't exciting. Although it is a classy vehicle for its size, the lack of flair may not make it everybody's top choice. Audi have done a fine job in making sure that people who will be using the Audi A2 as a small town or city car will be very pleased.

Drive

The Audi A2 is well refined and offers a classy experience which is unmatched by any of its rivals. The cabin is surprisingly roomy and the build quality is typical of the standard we now all expect from Audi. Anybody who is looking for a small town or city car will be very happy with this vehicle. The only down side is that it isn't exciting to drive. You will be comfortable, but not excited.

Faults & Repairs

The A2 comes with fairly high repair costs compared to similar cars of the same size as you are paying mainly for the Audi's reputation and popularity. The lightweight aluminium body is also easily dented which can prove very expensive to repair with new panels costing a lot more than one would expect. However like most Audi's the A2 doesn't suffer from any serious faults with the main culprits being the electrics and the turbo on the diesel engines.
