A number of used cars are similar to fine wine and, like them, just get better with age, according to brand new research. The new research, which was carried out by online car warranty company Warranty Direct, suggests that a number of used cars carry at least a few of the same qualities as fine wine and actually get better the older that they become.
Older versions of vehicles such as the Audi A4, Ford Fiesta and Porsche are amongst the used cars that actually succeed in putting their newer counterparts somewhat to shame when it comes to the all-important factor of reliability, Warranty Direct's research claims.
"Buying new may be the most desirable option when it comes to purchasing a car but it isn't always the most cost effective route" says the Managing Director of Warranty Direct, Duncan McClure Fisher. "Our analysis shows that new doesn't necessarily mean more reliable. We also found that repair costs are often higher for new models so, as well as paying over the odds for a new car, you may also be opening yourself up to additional, unwanted costs."
Purchasers of used cars who are searching for a vehicle that breaks down on considerably fewer occasions than is actually the case with their fancier, shinier new versions might also want to consider buying older versions of the likes of the Zafira, Vauxhall's family MPV and the commuter favourite known as the BMW 3 Series.
