Formula 1 fans around the world stand in both disgust and astonishment due to the outrageous theatrics which took place at last weekends Grand prix in Hockenheim Germany. Felipe Massa stood aside to allow team mate Fernando Alonso take the victory as he was instructed to do by his Ferrari team.
Having been found guilty the team was immediately fined $100,000 with the matter also referred to the FIA world motor sport council. Although suitable punishment is currently undecided, it´s been said that further action will be taken into effect after the up and coming Hungarian Grand prix this weekend.
The race started with a poor start from Red bull´s Sebastian Vettel´s with Alonso and Massa both passing on the outside leading the race into the first lap. By the 21st lap Alonso displayed his frustration to the pit wall by quoting "this is ridiculous" after briefly passing Massa.
By the 47th lap Ferrari had made their decision to back the Spaniard, therefore instructed Massa to take the back seat, regardless of the fact Alonso was ahead by 31 points going into the race, the decision was then put into action.
Overall it ended being a bitter victory for Ferrari, especially for Massa as he could have been celebrating his first win since Brazil 2008, instead was left feeling utterly dejected and miserable in yesterdays post race press conference. It was a bitter coincidence that Sunday also marked the one year anniversary of his near fatal accident in Budapest where a spring crashed into his helmet forcing him to spend almost 3 days in intensive care.
Never the less the day was left with a roar of fiery comments from fans which surrounded the atmosphere, including nicely fitted choruses of "Dirty victory" and "Kick em out". Massa and Ferrari both said at the press conference "I´m very professional and I´ve showed today how professional I am, "You have your job to do and I have mine."
Alonso by reflection was unapologetic quoting "I think you have a very strong result from Ferrari today, a very strong performance all weekend and if the final thought of the weekend is your question it´s because maybe you didn´t see the whole practice, qualifying and the race." This quote was his answer to how he compared this race to 2008 Grand Prix in Singapore.
While the rest of the world remain disappointed with the result of the weekend, Spain´s overall mood must be filled with nothing but delight as it´s another point to fuel their successful summer in sport after following their 2010 south African world cup victory Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.
