Dan Trent writes:
As has been reported previously charter flights from Farnborough are the exception rather than the rule these days, most car launches now going out on regular scheduled flights. I know, your heart bleeds, etc... But maybe it's a sign of renewed optimism in the industry that there are three launches leaving Farnborough this morning. And mine - the new VW Touareg - is at the back of the queue, forcing us to decamp to the canteen to wait for even a lounge to be free!
So while Peter and another contingent of hacks head out to Majorca for the Mercedes E-Class cabrio launch we're in unfamiliar surroundings at the other end of Farnborough's slick and highly exclusive terminal building. Things have moved on too, when I first started coming to Farnborough a few years back we were in a Portacabin!
Anyway, the benefits of being in the canteen mean much better coffee than from the machines in the usual lounge, something for which I'm very grateful after my usual neurosis about being late for the plane meant getting up two hours earlier than I needed to and I now need the caffeine hit to stay with it. And no, those pastries aren't all mine in case you were wondering. Though I was tempted.
And the game of car spotting in the car park has provided the usual rich pickings. I even noticed another Clio 172 Cup. Not my 172 Cup, I should point out. The 172 Cup I was hoping to drive down in today. No, my 172 Cup is still at the local Renault dealership consistently failing its MOT on a mysterious emissions-related issue. But this is another story...
