When it comes to fuel efficiency, Volvo appears to be taking a step in the right direction by introducing a new four-cylinder engine for its flagship S80 sedan. It just may be a rather small step, though.
Volvo will start including a four-cylinder, 2-liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection engine with its S80, as well as the V70 wagon and XC60 crossover, the Ford-owned Swedish automaker said in a statement today.
The engine will deliver 203 horsepower, allowing the S80 to launch from 0-62 miles per hour in a little under 8 seconds.
"We succeeded in making a four-cylinder engine that is as powerful as a 2.5-liter five-cylinder unit, and it's also much more energy-efficient," Magnus Jonsson, head of product development at Volvo Cars, said in the statement.
How much more energy efficient remains in question, though. Volvo says the S80 four-banger with an automatic transmission will use 8.3 liters of gas per 100 kilometers, or about 28 miles per gallon.
With European standards being used and Volvo not saying whether the mileage is for city or highway (we're guessing highway), it's unclear what kind of improvement the S80's new engine will be over the current 3.2-liter six-cylinder in the base two-wheel-drive S80. That model gets an EPA rating of 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
