Technology ain't cheap - at least not in Europe and on a Volkswagen.
The automaker said that it will price its 2011 Touareg Hybrid at 73,700 euros in Germany, about 20,000 euros, or $27,000, more than the base V6 diesel model of the luxury SUV.
VW s debuting the second-generatyion touarrge at the Geneva Auto Show next week, but said that customers in Germany can start ordering all versions of the big SUV already.
The hybrid, which couples a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 gas engine and an electric powertrain to deliver 380 horsepower almost 29 miles per gallon (U.S.) fuel economy. It carries enough battery to provide electric-only travel for short distances at speeds of up to 30 miles an hour.
It also is loaded with high-end electronics an safety features such as lane departure assist which helps keep sleepy or inattentive drivers from wandering out of their lane; interactive cruise control to help keep the car from following to closely and to brake to an emergency stop if it senses that a rear-end collision is about to happen.
VW hasn't said what how it will price the Touareg hybrid for the U.S. market when it is launched here later this year, but we expect it will be a bit lower than the German price (which equated to around $100,000 at today's exchange rate).
