Looks like some of the stakeouts in the Big Apple may be about to get a little quieter. And cleaner.
The New York Police Department is reportedly doubling the size of its hybrid-electric vehicle fleet this year by ordering about 150 Ford Fusion sedans and as many as 90 Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs.
NYPD will add the Ford hybrids to a fleet that includes the 40 Nissan Altima Hybrids the agency bought last year as well as the Toyota Priuses the NYPD uses for city patrolling, Ford spokeswoman Jennifer Moore said.
The additional hybrids give the largest U.S. city's police force an opportunity to cut both fuel costs and emissions. Traditional V-8 powered cop cars such as Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Impalas get about 10 miles per gallon under typical police-driving conditions.
With the Fusion's EPA rating of 41 miles per gallon in the city compared to the Crown Vic's 16 mpg city rating under normal circumstances, the agency can cut fuel costs in half for some of its vehicles by purchasing more hybrids.
Last month, Carbon Motors, the Indiana-based builder of law enforcement vehicles, said it had agreed to buy 240,000 BMW diesel engines in its effort to produce safer and lighter cars that would get about 40 percent better fuel economy than the traditional V-8s.
U.S. law enforcement agencies from all 48 continental states have pre-ordered about 12,500 Carbon Motor vehicles, though the company declined to identify the purchasing agencies.
