You know hybrid technology is going to be spreading through the various model lineups when Michigan Tech starts offering semester-long skills upgrade courses and past and present engineers from GM, Ford and Chrysler fill the classrooms.

The first class of 60 out-of-work engineers graduated earlier this year and a second class of 100 employed engineers adding to their skills just graduated from the upstate university's satellite program down around Detroit. They worked on hybrid vehicles donated by General Motors and, reportedly, a bunch of them were GM engineers.


A spokeswoman for Michigan Technical University said that a second batch of 100 already employed engineers is expected to take the school's third program in hybrid engineering starting in January.


The university website quotes some of the GM employee-graduates as praising the program for its training in real-world skills that will be needed in the new world of hybrids and other electrified vehicles.
