Mercedes-Benz reported today that two new gasoline engines offered in the 2010 CL and S Classes are as much as 24 percent fuel less thirsty and their power has increased by as much as 12.5 percent as the engines they replaced.

The new S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY with V6 engine, for example, requires just 7.6 liters of premium petrol per 100 kilometers (31 miles per gallon) in the New European Driving Cycle, which, granted, tend to be more generous than real-world driving conditions.


That corresponds to CO2 emissions of 177 g/km (previous model 10.0 l/100 km, 234 g/km CO2).


In the new versions of the S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, the combined fuel consumption declined to 9.4 and 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (25 mpg and 24.75 mpg) respectively; that is equivalent to 219 and 224 g/km CO2.


Crucial to this enhanced efficiency is the newly developed BlueDIRECT technology with third-generation spray-guided direct fuel injection in combination with the standard-fit start/stop function and the new 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission.


Depending on configuration, the V6 and V8 engines operate with or without turbocharger and can be combined with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and hybrid modules.
