Japanese Electric Vehicle Club Sets New Standard: 623.3 Miles on a Single Charge

The Japanese Electric Vehicle Club claims to have broken its own Guinness World Record, traveling 1003.184 kilometers (623.349 miles) in an EV on a single charge.

The club's modified Daihatsu Mira was powered by a Sanyo battery system containing more than 8,320 lithium-ion laptop batteries and achieved its single-charge range running at a speed of about 40 kilometers an hour (or about 25 mph).

Granted, that's hardly real-world driving, but 623 miles on one charge is unprecedented. The team employed 17 people taking turns as drivers during the course of their 27.5-hour effort. It took place at a track in Shimotsuma, in Ibaraki Prefecture.

In all, the drivers made 1,456 trips around the 689-meter track during May 22 and 23.

While Guinness World Records still recognizes their previous 555.6 kilometer (345.233 mile) journey from Tokyo to Osaka last year as the official record, the team has requested that the organization officially recognize this latest feat as the new milestone.
