Japan's Nikkei business newspaper has reported that Honda plans to introduce the Fit Hybrid in Japan later this year a the rock-bottom price of 1.5 million yen, or about $16,750.
That's a $1,900 premium over the base model of the gasoline-only Fit (left) but would still make the hybrid the cheapest gas-electric model in the market - almost $2,500 less than the Honda CR-Z hybrid and $3,000 below the Honda Insight.
One Japanese analyst told Reuters news service that he was concerned Honda's pricing could set off a price war in that country with Toyota, which has a smaller hybrid in the works but whose Prius - while still the best-selling hybrid in the world - starts almost $6,000 higher than what's being reported for the much smaller Fit Hybrid.
If only we could get 'em to bring the new little hybrid - and a hybrid price war - to our shores, but Honda's still insisting there are no plans for a U.S. model.
Honda, by the way, is declining to comment on the Fit Hybrid pricing report.
