Renowned race- and exotic-car designer Gordon Murray, who recently developed a streamlined auto manufacturing process, has now unveiled the vehicle he says will make it all work.


The Gordon Murray Design T.25 City Car - in the works for close to two years now, was publicly shown for the first time today during a symposium on business and the environment at Britain's Oxford University.


Murray has offered glimpses of the bodywork an sketches of the general design treatment in the past, but never the car itself, with its hinged front half and all-plastic body surrounding a tubular steel safety frame.


Murray has said that he took the original Mini as a starting point in his effort to design a car that would be easy and inexpensive to build, economical and environmentally friendly to operate and fun to drive.


The T.25 is a three-seater with a pair opf passenger seats arranged side-by-side behind the driver's seat. It is smaller than a Smart Fortwo and weighs in at just 1,212 pounds.


Murray, who is backed by Mohr Davidow Ventures, a Menlo Park,Calif., investment firm specializing in entrepreneurial companies seeking solutions to global problems in areas including energy and clean technology, has said the T.25 will be capable of providing fuel economy of around 75 miles per gallon.
