EV battery development efforts in the U.S. may be getting a boost soon - the federal energy Department is getting ready to hand out close to $2 billion in grants aimed at getting a domestic advanced-battery industry rolling.

A total of 122 companies have applied for the grants, according to the Washington Post. Among them are giants like Dow Chemical and Johnson Controls, and niche firms including A123Systems.
"We've had 20 years of bad behavior in the United States in terms of developing ideas into products," Mary Ann Wright, CEO of Johnson Controls' hybrid battery systems effort, told the Post.
