Fins, the bigger the better, were the auto design rage of the late '50s, we had the Japan-inspired school of origami design in the '70s - when any car without at least half a dozen sharp creases in its bodywork just wasn't trying - and side vents, or gills, have become quite popular these days.
So what's next in the search for a new look for our autos?
Well, with fuel economy now front and center, how 'bout tail cones?
They've been around for a long time although usually confined to wind tunnel testing and record-setting, dry-land speed runs. but there's a good body of work out there establishing that a properly designed tail cone can do wonders for fuel economy.
As much, perhaps, as a $10,000 full hybrid system in some instances.
