Daimler's doing it with Smart, Hertz, Enterprise, ZipCar and a few others with a variety of EVs, so why not us, les patrons of Citroen must have thought as they looked for ways to promote their upcoming electric car.
Thus is born another car-sharing service, this one featuring Citroen's 2011 C-Zero - a version francaise of Mitsubishi's i-MiEV electric city car.
The service, called Citroen Business Connected, will provide shared vehicles for French businessmen and civic and political leaders and will be run by Citroen Business Services in collaboration with the French car-sharing service Carbox.
.
The C-Zero, like its Japanese sibling, uses a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged with 120, 240 or 480-volt systems and can deliver up to 80 miles of range on a single charge. Top speed - which dramatically reduces range to about 50 miles, is 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph).
The car-sharing service will begin with the rollout of the four-seat C-Zero early next year and, we imagine, is aimed at helping Citroen demonstrate that, for many daily uses, EVs don't have to have hundreds of miles of range.
In the U.S., commercial car sharing works in several U.S. cities and services such as Zipcar are adding EVs to their fleets. But rental firms such as Hertz have far greater reach and are seen by car makers as a good way to spread the word about their EVs to a U.S. audience.
