Chevy to Debut New Aveo at Paris Show, But Offer Diesel Version in Europe Only

The all-new Chevrolet Aveo 5-door hatchback, which will go on sale in the United States and Canada next year, will debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show later this month.

The Aveo RS show car was displayed at the Detroit and Geneva motor shows earlier this year and the final production-ready car looks every bit as eye-catching as the show car.

The Aveos sold in North America will be offered with a choice of gasoline-powered four-cylinder engines. But, and this is very disappointing, only the European lineup will include a diesel-engine option.

In fact, if you buy an Aveo in Europe, you'll have the choice of two versions of a 1.3-liter diesel engine - one generating 75 horsepower and the other 95 horsepower. And those cars will feature fuel-saving start/stop technology!

Clearly, General Motors is waiting until it is convinced that a substantial number of Americans will embrace diesels before giving them the option of an Aveo fitted with a diesel engine.

Chevrolet's first 6-speed automatic transmission on a small car will be featured on the Aveo 1.4- and 1.6-liter models as an option in most European markets. Americans and Canadians won't have that option. Argh!

GM isn't releasing fuel-economy figures for the Aveo yet, but you could bet the farm that the most fuel-efficient versions available in Europe will get better mileage and produce fewer tailpipe emissions than the most fuel-efficient Aveos available in North America.
