Programs Will Use GridPoint Software, Help Determine Plug-Ins' Impact on Power Grid
The state of California and Maryland's largest power company, are working with smart-grid software developer GridPoint on test programs aimed at measuring how much government and institutional use of plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles can cut fuel costs and greenhouse-gas emissions.
The California Energy Commission will fund a two-year project in which 50 state-owned Toyota Priuses that are being converted to plug-in hybrids will be measured for items such as fuel economy, electricity consumption, carbon emissions and recharging durations, GridPoint said.
GridPoint's proprietary data-collection software also will be used by Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. in a similar test with four converted plug-in Priuses and a Ford Escape hybrid.
