AMP Electric Vehicles, the Cincinnati-based conversion systems company that developed and installed electric drivetrains for the now-defunct Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters, said it now has conversion packages for General Motors' Chevrolet Equinox (right).
The converted Equinox - which AMP says will be the first all-electric crossover SUV available - will have 0-60 acceleration of about 8 seconds and a top speed of 90 miles per hour.
Final pricing hasn't been set, but AMP said it will be less than $50,000 after federal tax credits are applied (which seems to indicate a list price of close to $58,000 for car and conversion - nearly twice the price of a base Equinox with a gasoline engine). AMP customers can buy a completed vehicle from the company or buy an Equinox and send it to AMP for conversion.
The company said it will formally unveil the AMP Equinox EV conversion at the 2010 New York International Auto Show in early April and that retail deliveries will begin this summer.
The vehicle will have a single-charge range of up to 150 miles, or about 50% more than the Nissan's all-electric Leaf - which is expected to sell for considerably less.
AMP, which was founded in 2007, made the announcement in conjunction with the grand opening Wednesday evening of its new production headquarters in Cincinnati.
