Over the next two days I'm going to try and drive 1000 miles on a sole tank of diesel in my long-term Seat Leon Ecomotive. Eek.
It's got a 55-litre tank, and over the first 21,000 miles of ownership, I've been averaging a touch over 60mpg.
Over the past few days, I've been training myself into developing an eco driving mindset. So lots of gentle acceleration, braking with the gears and a gentle crawl in the inside lane of Britain's motorway network.
It's worked to an extent, having averaged 67mpg over a 300-mile round trip this weekend. However, that's unlikely to be enough for me to crack the magic 1000 miles, even allowing for any potential reserves in the tank.
But I'm getting mixed advice from those I tell about the trip on how to squeeze out the best mpg. Heater on or off? Cruise control and on-board sat-nav allowed? Pump up the tyres? Optimum speed?
So, question is, just how does one go about the most efficient driving?
