Every automaker, including low-volume, high-performance brands like Ferrari, is going to have to reduce fuel consumption in the coming years, and the Italians will show their first tangible effort at the Paris Motor Show. The California is expected to get an updated version of its 4.3-liter V8 powertrain that doesn't yet adopt a full hybrid system but may get an automatic start-stop system and brake energy regeneration.

The regeneration system would be similar to those found on many other recent vehicles that uses a smart alternator to charge the battery only when the car is coasting. The engine is also expected to get some internal improvements to reduce friction, a new direct injection system and, for the first time ever in a Ferrari, cylinder deactivation. Full details will be available when the show opens at the end of the month.
