The 21st film in this astounding series is about to hit our screens and there’s no doubt that the suave agent, 007, will be showing us some more death defying stunts as he takes on the worlds villains once again. And with a bond of course there will be a bond girl seduced by his wit, his car or his gun!
Here’s our pick of those seductive bond cars that have amazed us through the years, and a few that maybe didn’t!
The classic bond car has to be the Aston Martin DB5. It was 1964 and being driven by none other than Sean Connery in Goldfinger. Rotating number plates, machine guns appearing from the body work, smoke screen makers, radar screen, tyre slashers all impressively added to the classic car by Q and his army of scientists culminating in the ever needed and useful passenger ejector seat. All the toys for all the boys, bond or not!
The DB5 has also made appearances in Thunderball, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale. Not driven by the faint Hearted, the DB5 goes 0-60 in 8.1secs and a top speed of 143mph, impressive for a 1960’s car.
Does it have the bond factor? 9/10 This has Bond all over it!
The Toyota 2000 GT Convertible, although not one of the most revered of Bond cars, was still recognised as an amazing piece of machinery. Connery was too tall for the original version and had to have two more models made custom fitted for filming.
With only 350 coupes ever made, the exclusivity of this car definitely carries some bond clout. However, being a Japanese car, some critics were not impressed. Even with the rear fitted camera filming the villains in pursuit of England’s finest.
Does it have the Bond factor? 3/10 Where’s the ejector seat!
This pure American Muscle beast might lack some of the suave Bond nature, and it definitely lacks in the toy department. However, the brute puts on a show through the US streets and runs rings around the cops using its 7litre V8 engine! Displayed no better than the two-wheel stunt down a small alleyway.
Bond might be better suited to the more sophisticated form of smoothly dealing with villains at the press of button, but all will admit there was still something spectacular about seeing the US made “stang” roar!
Does it have the Bond factor? 5/10It could roar like a lion, but wherewas the bite?
The Lotus Esprit S1 wowed audiences all over the world with its amphibious tendencies. If we’re talking a cool extra to have on a car, spoilers, neon lights, then surely you can’t beat the “drive it off a pier to escape a hostile helicopter and enjoy your aquatic surroundings as your car become a rocket firing submarine” extra.
All car lovers know the old school Lotus Esprit lacked a certain reliability factor and could do with a more spacious cockpit but the 2.2litre Bond wagon will always be remembered as the worlds 1st aquatic car. Genius!
Does it have the Bond factor? 9/10 – does your Astra let you go for ocean-bed drives on a Sunday afternoon?
The 2CV, made for farmers and doctors did its job. No more than a reliable little run-a-round for those who wanted to get from one field to another. Hardly the Bond car dreams are made of. But it did its job for the farmers and it did its job for Bond. Ducking and weaving through traffic, the 2CV helps Bond escape to freedom.
There’s no toys and real speed but who are we not to admire the car that contributed to saving our very own 007.
Does it have the Bond factor? 1/10 – I’m afraid the 2CV heroics aren’t enough
The Aston Martin V8 Volante had all the mod cons. From lasers in the front wheels which Bond uses to slice a cop car in half, to missile launchers hidden behind the headlights, re-inflating tyres, a police scanner, built-in skis, jet-propulsion and a windscreen that can track targets. The ice-skating ability of this car was also put to test during the film but of course, the Aston stood strong.
A true Aston Martin, the Volante, is one of the most prestigious and revered cars in the company’s history, as well as Bonds history. The 5.3 litre V8 coupe does 0-60mph in 6.1seconds, not a toy to be played with, unless you think you too have the Bond factor.
Does it have the Bond Factor? 7/10 – There’s style, muscle and weapons. We say yes!
Not a real Bond car? Well he drove it and you loved it, so our guide to Bond says different. Bond plus the power of a small army in artillery = Bond Factor even though it does lack the speed and agility of any Aston, there aren’t many out there that don’t want to take the Tank for a spin!
Does it have the Bond factor? 5/10 – Yes and no. Want to blow up your villains, go nuts. Want to go anywhere quickly? You’d be better off in a London bus!
The BMW 750iL may not have the obvious vanishings of an Aston, but its subtle yet stunning, it’s discreet but powerful, its calm but ready to unleash. Specifically unleashing missiles, guns, re-inflating tyres and a metal cutter, this understated car still packs a punch. To top all that, it’s controlled by a remote! Every lads dream remote controlled car.
The V12-engined German saloon however, is still German, and is still just a saloon.
Does it have the Bond factor? 7/10 – a remote controlled, missile launching stoke of near genius. NEAR…
The BMW made its second imprint into Bond history in the world is not enough when Bond was driving a Z8. Brosnan displays the speed and power this car produces with its 400bhp V8 engine and lightweight frame. This £86,000 beauty is definitely not subtle but more than provides for the stylish requirements for Mr Bond.
Missiles, long distance listening device, a computer display windscreen and the ability to hit 60mph in 4.7secs, the Z8 does not disappoint. Unfortunately the Z8 does meet its end when the roadster gets sawn in half by a saw-touting helicopter, but hey, it was a saw-touting helicopter.
Does it have the Bond factor? 8/10 – An exhilarating car but does it live up to the Aston?
Its an Aston Martin, it’s armed to the teeth with missiles, guns and ejector seats…. Which by all means is a grand yardstick to measure any Bond car. But let’s be honest here, what’s the one superpower anyone wants? Invisibility! And if we cant make ourselves invisible, then lets make our cars invisible. Q has out-done himself this time!
The classically lined Aston Martin oozes all that bond is. We have the gone through many cars from the 60’s James Bond to the naughties James Bond, but on either side of that spectrum sits Aston Martin. Synonymous with all that Bond stands for.
Does it have the Bond factor? 10/10 – invisibility. Spot on.
