What to do if you Breakdown

When you breakdown it is often too dangerous to stop and get out. Our guide offers advice on how to stop and call for help safely.

If you Breakdown on a Motorway

The motorway hard shoulder is built for emergency use such as a breakdown or accident, though if you can find a safer place to stop off the motorway, this is the recommended due to the speed of the traffic.
  • Pull onto the hard shoulder as far left as is possible, position your wheels to also point left and switch your hazard lights on
  • Ensure you and your passengers exit the vehicle through the left-hand door
  • Leave animals in the vehicle unless it is an absolute emergency
  • Retreat up the bank and if possible, stand behind the barrier
  • Don't attempt even simple repairs due to the dangerous speeds present on motorways
  • Once you're in a safe place use a mobile phone to call for help, describing your location
  • If you don't have a mobile phone walk to an emergency telephone on your side of the carriageway. It is free and connects to the police and highways agency. – NEVER ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE CARRIAGEWAY
  • If you feel at risk from another person, return to your vehicle by a left-hand door and lock all doors

When you have to rejoin the motorway after suffering a breakdown, it is vital that you use the hard shoulder to build up your speed before pulling out so that you do not obstruct the speed of the traffic behind you.

If you Breakdown on the Roads

If you experience a breakdown on the roads, get your vehicle off the road or pull over to the very edge and warn other traffic by turning on your hazard warning lights. This is essential if it is dark, or your vehicle is causing an obstruction.

It is advised that you keep reflective jackets and signs in the car for use when you breakdown, and if you still fear the car may be hit by oncoming traffic, ensure all passengers get out of the car and well away from traffic.

If it is safe for you to fix the car put a warning triangle or other permitted warning device on the road at least 45m (50 yards) behind your car on the same side of the road. Always take great care when doing this.

What is Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown Cover is a form of insurance policy that covers vehicle drivers and giving them peace of mind. By even buying a cheap breakdown cover plan, you can benefit from roadside assistance if you suffer a mechanical failure that is significant enough to leave you stranded on the roads!
