New seat belt laws
The Law
- The government has passed a law that states all children up to
135cm tall (around 4’5”), or the age of 12, whichever
comes first, in the front or rear seats
in cars, vans and other goods vehicles
must travel in the correct child restraint
for their weight with very few exceptions.
- It also states that; Visitors to the UK from abroad must also use
the correct child restraint for their
children there are no exceptions for
them. Family and friends expecting
visitorsshould make sure that their
visitors understand the rules. They
may need to help them make arrangements
so that children use the correct child
restraint at all times. Car rental
companies can supply child restraints
for their customers if booked in advance.
- The driver is liable to prosecution if a child under
14 years does not wear a seat belt
or child restraint as required.
Exceptions
There are few exceptions to this however,
- In a licensed taxi or licensed
private hire vehicle
- In cases of unexpected necessity over a short distance
- Where two occupied child restraints in the rear seat
prevent you fitting a third.
- In older vehicles with no rear seat-belts
- In buses and coaches with seat belts fitted, passengers
aged 14 years and above must use
them. Passengers on vehicles used
for public fare paying passengers.
Seat-belt; The facts
- In a crash someone not wearing a seat belt is more likely
to die than someone using one. In 2006, of the 1,612 car
occupants killed, 34 per cent were not wearing a seat belt.
- While few people admit to regularly travelling without
a seat belt, research shows that 24 per cent of people
admit they sometimes don't wear a seat belt in the
back, and 10 per cent in the front. There is also evidence
that people are less likely to use seat belts on short
or familiar journeys or at low speeds. This puts them
at serious risk of injury in a crash.
